Statewide smoking ban

Check this out.

I'm ALL in favor of it. I know some here are not.

It's unconstitutional.

Much as it burns to say so, I agree with Kathleen.

Dear God, what's happening to me.

That said, I'd be very happy if it happened.

Bollocks. It'll dry up a lot of the money that the state gets from tobacco taxes; it is -- as Kathleen rightly points out -- contitutionally tricky.

Most importantly, it will cause your friendly neighborhood opinions editor to shoot steam out of his ears and destroy things. (*Krusty voice*: "His ears if we're lucky!")

I don't believe it is unconstitutional. It would be one thing if there weren't so many studies showing secondhand smoke to cause cancer, heart disease, etc in people who have never smoked a cigarette in their lives. Since secondhand smoke is considered a Type A carcinogen (just as asbestos) we need to treat it as such and limit it in public places where it can harm others. If Phillip Morris can come up with a cigarette which many peer-reviewed studies show there is no harm to others, than I'd say we don't need the ban. Until then, I think it's best for Iowa, especially since there are so many other states which already have smoking bans in place.
